The loneliness that more people cannot reach

Two groups, twenty two days, and the one feeling that changed how alone they felt.

Loneliness is not always about how many people are in the room.

You can sit at a full table and feel it. You can be held and still feel unmet. This is one of the quieter sorrows of a sensitive life. If you know it, you also know something else. Being told to see more people does not touch the place where it lives.

So here is something stranger, and gentler.

Researchers followed two groups of people for twenty two days. They asked them, every single day, what they had felt. One group was healthcare workers. One hundred and seventy one of them, leaving more than three thousand daily entries between them. The other group was ordinary people going about ordinary lives. Three hundred and six of them, with more than six thousand entries.

The scientists were looking for one feeling in particular. Awe.

Not happiness. Not calm. Awe. The feeling you get in front of something vast enough that you briefly forget the size of your own problems.

Here is what they found.

On the days when a person felt more awe than was usual for them, that same person felt less alone. It held in both groups. It held after the researchers set aside every other good feeling. So this was not simply a pleasant mood doing the work.

And when they looked for what carried the effect, one thread came up again and again. A sense of being connected to something.

Let me be careful with this, because you deserve care rather than a sales pitch. The study watched what moved together. It cannot prove that one thing caused the other. Most of the people in it were older women. It is a window, not a law.

Still. Sit with the shape of it.

The remedy for feeling separate was not more company.

It was wonder.

Notice your breath for a moment before we go further. Notice that you are being breathed, and that you did not arrange it. Notice the small weight of your hands wherever they are resting.

Here is what I think is happening, offered as a companion and not an authority.

Loneliness has a shape. It is the feeling of being a sealed thing. A self with edges, sitting apart from everything else, having to reach across a gap to be met.

Awe does something to those edges.

Stand under a sky with too many stars in it. Watch light come through leaves. Hear a piece of music that opens something in your chest. The sealed feeling loosens. For a moment you are not a small separate thing looking out at the world. You are a part of it, made of the same material, held in the same vastness.

That is not a metaphor your mind invents. It is a shift your whole body makes.

And it may be that the ache you have been naming loneliness has never been about a shortage of people. It may be about a shortage of vastness. A life lived entirely at the scale of the inbox, the errand, the ceiling of the room.

You cannot always summon more people. You can almost always find something larger than yourself.

The sky is free and it is right there.

If you want something to carry from this, let it be this small.

Once today, look up for longer than feels necessary. Not a glance. Long enough for your eyes to soften and your shoulders to follow. Let yourself register how far away the sky actually is. Let the distance be real to you rather than an idea.

You might feel your breathing change without asking it to.

Or find your vastness somewhere else. Water does it. So does anything very old, a tree, a stone, a piece of music that outlived its maker. So does looking closely at something small enough to be strange, a leaf held near your face, the pattern in your own hand.

The requirement is not that it is big. The requirement is that it is bigger than the story you have been carrying today.

And if nothing moves in you when you try, let that be welcome too. Some days the door stays closed. Forcing awe is like forcing sleep, and you already know how that ends.

The invitation is only to leave a gap in the day where something vast could reach you.

That is all this really asks.

Not that you feel less alone by trying harder. Not that you fix your separateness through effort. Only that you stop filling every moment, and let the world be large in your presence for a breath or two.

It has been large the entire time.

You have simply been busy.
