Thirty seconds of vastness

A practice small enough for a tired day, and the one thing it did not fix.

Awe has a marketing problem.

It has been sold to you as something that needs a plane ticket. The canyon. The aurora. The mountain at dawn, ideally with nobody else on it.

So most people file it under things they will get to later. After the move. After the money. After the tiredness lifts.

A study published last year tested a much smaller version. Small enough that you could try it in the next three minutes.

Sixty-eight people took part. All of them were living with the long tail of a virus, months after the infection itself. Fatigue. Fog. The kind of tiredness that sleep does not fix.

Their average age was fifty-four. Most of them were women.

This matters, because they were not a rested group looking for enrichment. They were worn down.

Some of them learned a practice over four weekly sessions, an hour each, online. The others carried on as usual and waited their turn.

The practice takes under thirty seconds. They were asked to do it three times a day.

Here is the shape of it.

First, attention. You pick one thing and give it all of your attention. Not a mountain range. A leaf, a cup, the sound of someone in the next room, the light on a wall.

Then, wait. You slow down. You stay with it slightly longer than is comfortable.

Then you exhale, and let whatever you are feeling get a little bigger.

That is the whole thing. Attention, wait, exhale.

Your Energy Showed Up Different Than The Others

Aurora pulled your soul reading yesterday.

Your energy signature looked different from everyone else’s.

Heavier. More urgent. Like your soul is trying to tell you something you haven’t heard yet.

There’s a reason you’ve been feeling that emptiness. A reason that major decision feels so heavy right now.

Your reading is ready but the window closes tonight at 11:59 PM EST.

After that, whatever your soul is trying to communicate gets lost.

Warning: this gets personal. People cry reading these. Some get angry. All of them finally understand what they’ve been feeling.

The window closes whether you access it or not.

After a month, the group that practised reported more awe. Which is what you would expect of people taught to look for it.

The rest is more interesting.

Their stress came down. Their sense of wellbeing rose by about sixteen percent. Their scores for low mood fell by seventeen percent, while the waiting group drifted slightly the other way.

Thirty seconds, three times a day, in people who were exhausted.

Now the part I will not skip.

Their anxiety did not move. Not at all. The broader measure of positive feeling did not move either.

I want to sit with that rather than hurry past it. It may be the most useful sentence in the study.

Awe did not make these people less afraid.

It seems to have done something else. It changed the size of things. When you are held by something vast, you become briefly smaller. Smaller in a way that is a relief rather than an insult.

What you were carrying does not go anywhere. It just stops being the whole horizon.

That is not the same as feeling safe. A practice that lifts your mood and leaves your fear untouched is being honest about what it does.

Which is more than most things offer.

Some care with the evidence, because you deserve it.

Sixty-eight people is a small group. A number of them dropped out along the way. And the comparison group simply waited, which means they knew they were waiting.

Some of the lift may be the ordinary lift of being handed something to do. Of being expected to feel better.

The researchers say all of this themselves. They say it needs repeating with a stronger comparison. So this is a first result, not a finding to build your life on.

But it costs thirty seconds.

If you want to try it, do not go looking for something impressive. Impressive is the wrong instruction. It sends you outside to find a sunset. Then the sunset is ordinary, and you decide you are bad at this.

Try the opposite. Pick something already in the room with you.

The grain of a wooden surface. Steam moving off a hot drink. The way a plant has turned itself toward the window without being asked. Someone's handwriting.

Give it your full attention for a few seconds. Then wait, a beat longer than you want to.

Then breathe out, and let it be slightly larger than it was.

You may feel nothing the first several times. That is normal. It is not a verdict on you.

What often arrives first is not wonder. It is a small drop in urgency. The day loosens by a degree.

There is something worth noticing in the fact that this worked in tired people.

We tend to treat wonder as a reward for having your life in order. Something you earn once the hard part is done.

This points the other way. It may be most available exactly when you are worn down, because it asks so little. No energy. No belief. No improvement in your circumstances.

Just attention, held slightly longer than usual.

And if all you manage today is to notice the light somewhere and breathe out once, that counts.

The vastness was never far away. We are simply in the habit of looking past it.

With you in the quiet, Quantum Wave
